BIO

Michelle L. MessierMy name is Michelle L. Messier. This is my 11th year of practice and I have more than 17 years experience in the field of social services. In 1993, I received my Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Boston College in the field of Human Development in the School of Education. After earning my BA, I was employed at a Domestic Violence Shelter providing legal advocacy and counseling to female residents and their children. While earning my Master of Social Work (MSW) Degree from Boston College, I trained in the Department of Veterans Affairs Hospital providing clinical social work services to female and male Veterans. In 2000 after earning my MSW, I provided clinical treatment services to female adolescents and their families at an Intensive Residential Treatment Program (IRTP) in Massachusetts. In addition, I worked at several local Hospitals in the Emergency Room Department providing clinical evaluations and coordination for clinical services for patients of all ages. Over the past seven years, I have been working in a Psychiatric Hospital with Children, Adolescents, and Families in Rhode Island. I have extensive experience working with children and adolescents, who have been placed in acute psychiatric inpatient settings, residential placements, foster care placements, and adoptive homes. Furthermore, I have clinical expertise providing family therapy. I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and State of Rhode Island.

My approach to therapy is to embrace a client’s strengths by supporting and guiding a client to discover new directions and solutions. I use a thoughtful, caring, respectful, and strength-based approach. A client can change his or her direction and begin a new chapter in his or her life. Together with a client, treatment goals are developed and pathways to reach these goals are revealed.
